It did not sit right with me to “sleep train” my children and I realised that others must feel this way too. The drive behind what I do now is to give that support and hopefully ensure my clients feel at ease and empowered about their children’s sleep to make realistic and gentle tweaks to their daily routines to achieve this.
I am Emily, a gentle and holistic sleep coach at Fox and The Moon Infant Sleep Services based in Derbyshire in the UK. I am a Mum of two boys and specialise in supporting parents with their children’s sleep. I help to normalise infant behaviour and support Mothers and Fathers with their mental health. I also support families with anything from gentle night weaning, frequent wake ups, early rising etc and also working alongside parents with younger babies to establish healthy and nurturing sleep environments and flexible routines.
I started my business at the end of 2019, I had just had my second son prematurely and was dealing with the trauma of his birth and subsequent health issues and noticed there was a huge gap for gentle, nurturing parental support. I then trained with Lyndsey Hookway and BabyEm in the holistic sleep coaching programme and obtained my OCN Level 6 Qualification.
I suffered postnatally with both of my children and really wish I had access to support that would not only help me with the way I was feeling but also help me feel more empowered and confident in my parenting decisions.
My own experiences in becoming a Mother and especially having a sick and premature baby definitely influences the way I carry out my work. I myself have been there and understand the trials and tribulations experienced by the families I work with.
I feel challenged by my industry in general and here is why – we aren’t regulated, so I find social media especially is saturated with incorrect and often damaging sleep advice and it takes a long time to help people see that there are other ways that wont compromise your parenting values and ethos. People often have pre-conceived ideas of what a sleep consultant is and I am trying my best to break those ideas down and change opinions.
The biggest question I get asked is: how does it work?
And the answer to that is simple. I ask for a sleep diary alongside a 'fact finding form' from you with specific pointers and then I go away and analyse that. We then schedule a phone or Zoom consultation and talk about your sleep goals and then you decide on a service that is right for you. This may be a comprehensive sleep plan of action or it could be something more intense, such as a sleep plan of action followed by a few weeks of 1:1 support that is most often given by WhatsApp. I help you with planning your day and help to optimise and improve your child’s sleep.
I live and breathe this job, it means the world to me and I am very lucky to be helping so many people all across the world.
