I was recently asked to review Mindful Mamma - The 4th Trimester. After my experience with postnatal depression, I know all too well the emphasis placed on pregnancy and birth and the neglect experienced by some within the fourth trimester. Did you even know there was a fourth trimester? Or maybe you knew but not until you experienced the intensity for yourself? A lot of my experience could have been salvaged if this information was readily available to me at the time; if I didn't have to search my soul and the depths of the internet to find it.
Thankfully, Sophie Fletcher & Sophie Burch have created a wonderful, constructive and gentle educational package designed to support your fourth trimester. They are 2 mothers and birth professionals with more than 20 years experience between them. They say: "In our societies, it's more and more common for people to live at some distance to their relatives, and so the support network that was there in the past, has faded into the past too." I mention this almost constantly as I speak with women who grapple with the intensity of motherhood, recovery and parenting almost entirely alone; often feeling isolated where postnatal mental illness can manifest.
Here is my review:
Sometimes it can be hard to "do the work". But this course is broken down into bite sized pieces that you just cannot wait to try. They promise safety, peace and self-love. From the start, I felt really comforted and supported to commence the process of delving into supporting myself within the fourth trimester. The introduction was so warm and inviting.
I particularly noticed a great balance between introducing those who are new to mindfulness and deepening an understanding and adding to a pre-existing toolbox for those who are already familiar with the concepts.
The entire course is very encouraging but also realistic and gentle in terms of when you will complete these "tasks" such as short meditations and watching knowledgeable videos. The videos are very visually appealing and engaging as well as interactive with practical ideas for support.
The take-home messages are clear as the information comes in a variety of forms (print outs, videos, audio). I got the feeling that I was being taught yet empowered to trust myself which I really appreciated. The course includes absolutely beautiful affirmations and meditations recorded in times that are easily achievable to complete.
I so resonate with the "becoming a mum" section. It emulates everything I understand motherhood to be (the sacrifice and the turmoil yet the perfection). I also particularly enjoyed the practical information about how to support yourself when your baby is crying. I think this is important knowledge for a time when emotions and thoughts can escalate in the moment.
I really appreciated the personal accounts within the course. These bring home the message that no mum or parent is alone within this period. I felt as though the facilitators were talking with you as opposed to at you.
The course has helped me personally and professionally and overall, I would recommend it to anyone - even those beyond the first 40 days of motherhood.
